The beauty in our backyard

Hello Everybody,

Life used to be full of of places to go and people to see; but since Covid19, navigating the world has changed. No trips in the foreseeable future for me. So, I've shifted my travel focus closer.  Much closer.  The destination is my hometown; and my home is the resort.  A resort that, regrettably, doesn't clear the dirty dishes left outside my room.  Still there.  Every morning.  It will be noted in my TripAdvisor review.  But I digress, here are some reflections on appreciating your little corner of the world.

Three Ways of Looking at the Sunset

Earth turns away
 sun puts on a show
enticing us
 not to go

sipping the sunset
ice melts in my drink
waiting for sight
of first firefly tonight

day is behind
night is ahead
going, going, gone

On the list of places I won't be going this summer is the American Players Theater in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The plays I've attended there have all been outstanding.  As wonderful as the performances are, the venue really takes top billing. Located on top of a hill, the Theatre In The Woods is an open air auditorium encircled by towering trees. Pre performance, patrons feast on picnic dinners in the meadow at the base of the hill.  As dusk nears, folks meander to the trail head for the gentle winding ascent through the forest to the theater.  Upon arrival, they treat themselves to a glass of champagne from the canteen, or a hot cocoa, if the weather has turned chilly.  The performance about to begin, they take their seats as the sun makes its exit, right on cue.  Surrounded in darkness, the lights come up on stage ...

Unfortunately, there won't be any performances on the hill this summer.  While everything is on hold, the actors from APT have used some of their time to create and share:

This love letter to a special place and time in Tracy Michelle Arnold's life is so beautiful.  The tender tone, the poignant imagery - don't you just want to be there?!

Home may not seem exotic but it can be exquisite.

I'll leave you with one last thought about staying home...

"We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time."

T.S. Eliot

That's all for now.  Hope you are finding beauty and inspiration wherever you are.

Much Love,
Steph

  1. I'm having the same issues with housekeeping at my resort! But I have been "pandemic gardening" - which is a thing now, right? I love having the time to create my own little garden paradise, which is equally enjoyed by the birds, bees and unfortunately occasionally devoured by rabbits.
